- Hockey Stick
- Hockey tape (usually cloth tape, black tape or white tape)
- Scissors
- Optional: Stick wax for added grip
Ensure the stick is clean and dry. Remove any previous wrap, new tape job, or residue. A clean surface ensures the tape adheres properly, allowing you to get the best tape job possible.
Begin at the top of the handle. Leave a small tab of tape hanging off the end to fold over for a clean finish.
Start wrapping the tape around the top, creating a knob. This helps improve grip and prevents the stick from slipping out of your hands. Wrap several layers around the top to form a small knob, then start spiraling the tape down the shaft. Overlap the tape slightly as you go down to ensure full coverage and durability.
Wrap the tape in a spiral down the stick's handle, covering the area where your bottom hand grips the stick. Depending on your own preference, you might tape down 6-10 inches or further.
Cut the tape and press down the end firmly to avoid it unraveling. Optionally, you can add some wax to the taped handle for additional grip.
Fun Fact: Hockey is one of the fastest-paced sports, featuring three 20-minute periods. Hockey players skate at top speeds up, down, and around the ice, firing shots that can reach up to 100 miles per hour.
Use cloth tape. White and black hockey tape are the most common colors.
Begin taping at the heel of the blade (where the blade meets the stick's shaft). Wrap the tape around the blade, leaving a small tab hanging off to fold over for a clean finish.
Continue wrapping the tape around the blade, overlapping each pass slightly to ensure full coverage. Keep the tape smooth and free of wrinkles to maintain an even surface.
Continue wrapping until you reach the toe of the blade. Cut the tape and press down the end firmly.
Some hockey players prefer to add extra tape around the toe of the blade for additional durability. To do this, wrap the tape around the toe several times in a circular motion.
Rub the taped blade with a puck or a piece of wax to smooth out any rough edges and secure the tape in place. This also improves puck control.
Did You Know? Although hockey pucks have been used since the sport's inception, the term "pucks" did not come into common use until February 7, 1876.
Change Tape Regularly: Regularly change the tape on your stick and blade to maintain good grip and control.
Customize Your Grip: Experiment with different knob sizes and taping patterns to find what works best for you.
Use Wax: Adding stick wax to the taped blade can improve control and prevent the tape from getting waterlogged.
Wrapping your stick and blade correctly is crucial for enhancing your performance on the ice. By following this guide, you'll ensure better grip, control, and durability, allowing you to play at your best. Regularly updating your tape job and customizing it to your desired size and personal preference will keep you ready for any game or practice.
